Living between both Dublin & London, 25 year old Dylan Walshe has gone from strength to strength as a solo artist. Dylan cuts a refreshing figure as a real songwriting talent, singing stripped down songs from the heart. His songs are steeped in universal topics such as introspection, existence and love with a deep honesty. (Dylan)"I sing songs that I write but I don't deem myself part of the singer songwriter genre or folk rock for that matter 'cause I just don't find that stuff interesting. I like an edge to things and a lot of singer songwriters are soft and quite often just playing an acoustic guitar can be enough for a songwriter to stick their songs under folk and that's fine they can do what they want but I just don't want any part of it. The idea of being associated with those types of genres makes me feel uncomfortable. I just expect a song to be believable."
Do you consider yourself folk?- "I'm not folk no. The sound of folk I suppose has an element in what I do as in the progression of a story within the song, the odd ballad, the raw sound of guitar and vocal, maybe even the accent (laughs), but they're nothing to do with its tradition. I respect the early recorded musicians too much to mimic them. There's other forms of music that have a stronger presence in the songs. The songs are vocally driven and the lyrics are a large part of it for me, but the music itself hasn't been pushed or brought in any specific direction with other musicians or instruments."
Recent performances on London station Resonance 104.4FM saw him celebrated as "Amazing" & "Passionate"(Resonance Fm).- "There was a lot of talking and a bit of dribble in the show but Justin and Sophie(hosts) were easy to be around and putting the songs out that way had an honesty to it."
With a past of being in various bands since his mid-teens, taking on different roles such as drummer and guitarist, it seems that Dylan has heard and played enough songs from enough angles to recognise his own sound when he hears it.- "In one of the first bands that I was in at about 15 or 16 we ended up doing shows with Aslan to big enough crowds and at that stage I was struggling to even hold down a bar chord and the rest of the band were at a similar stage of developement. So we had to learn fast and it was good experience at that age. But that's all it was-learning and underage drinking."
Currently working with Sterling Roswell formerly of Spacemen 3, Dylan is making regular solo appearances around London, Dublin and elsewhere. "I'm confident about the songs and they've already served a major purpose before they're played to anyone-they keep me stable enough to get by-well most of the time."
